It’s the 12th Clinical Data Management workshop. As the international meeting for specialists, we encourage attendees from all levels – from beginners to experts – to participate in this annual meeting. Recently, Japanese authorities have encouraged clinical development professionals to resolve issues such as drug-lag. As global studies become more popular, many questions remain about what tasks should be performed as part of CDM in Japan. That’s the reason why we selected this year’s main theme. Objectives of this annual meeting are to improve the quality of trials and to provide ideas for data management activities. This annual meeting will deliver information to attendees about the Japanese clinical data management processes, as well as providing opportunities to meet and network with colleagues in Clinical Data Management. The sessions include: • Standards, Quality level • Optimized process of data management and clinical development • Best practice of data management • Technical solutions for data managers • New technology to affect data management processes.

Shared Academic Fellowship in Clinical and Organizational Ethics at the University of Toronto

Due Date:
Mon, 01/12/2009
Due Date Description:
Fellowship application deadline

SHARED ACADEMIC FELLOWSHIP IN CLINICAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL ETHICS 2009-2010

The University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics (JCB) www.utoronto.ca/jcb and the Centre for Clinical Ethics (CCE) http://www.jointcentreforbioethics.ca/partners/cce.shtml invite applications for a shared paid Academic Fellowship in Clinical and Organizational Ethics starting in July 2009.

The JCB is a partnership between the University of Toronto and 15 affiliated healthcare organizations. The JCB studies important ethical, health-related topics through research and clinical activities. The JCB is a network of over 180 multidisciplinary professionals seeking to improve health care standards at both national and international levels. At the JCB, theory is put into practice. Our mission is to provide leadership in bioethics research, education, practice and public engagement. Over 30 Fellows have completed the JCB Fellowship Program since it began in 2000 and the vast majority are now working in the field of bioethics.

The CCE is a joint venture of Providence Healthcare, St. Joseph's Health Centre, and St. Michael's Hospital

The mission of the Centre for Clinical Ethics is to enable members of the health care community to identify and resolve ethical issues which arise in the clinical setting. We do this through education, case consultations, policy development, and research. As a faith based Centre we are committed to the core values of our three supporting institutions and to broadening the understanding of the role that faith plays in the questions which confront people in their search for healing.

The Academic Fellow will spend one year supporting ethics programs in the JCB healthcare partner, CCE, contributing to the intellectual/scholarly activities of both the JCB and CCE, and thereby enhancing skills in clinical and organizational ethics activities (consultation, policy development, teaching, research ethics, research, and other organizational/clinical ethics program initiatives). There will be an emphasis on developing leadership capacity in these areas. Through the JCB and CCE, the Fellow will have numerous opportunities for multi-disciplinary ethics networking, continuing education, and access to a wide range of clinical ethics and organizational ethics expertise in a variety of health care settings. This Academic Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for the Fellow to make significant contributions to the ethics programs at the JCB and CCE, and to broaden and deepen their own scholarly and clinical/organizational expertise. The stipend for this fellowship is CAD $38,000/year plus 4% vacation pay.

The ideal candidate will hold a graduate degree in religion, e.g. from a divinity school or a faculty of theology, or a graduate degree in religious studies. This candidate should also have undertaken significant course work in ethics, including, but not limited to bioethics, and have some previous experience in applied clinical or organizational ethics. Each applicant is expected to propose a research project that involves an application of theological ethics and can be completed within one year, which requires submitting with one’s application a description of the project, an explanation of why the applicant is interested in the project and why the applicant believes it will be meaningful to others in the field. The applicant should include an explanation about why the applicant needs access to a clinical setting in order to accomplish this project. Applicants will be ranked based on (1) their previous training in ethics, including bioethics, (2) their experience in applied clinical or organizational ethics, (3) their commitment to continuing to work in the field of clinical or organizational ethics, (4) their potential to contribute to the field of bioethics, (5) their interpersonal skills, and (6) the suitability and feasibility of their proposed research project.

If currently enrolled in a degree program, graduate students must have completed their degree or have formally submitted their thesis for defense before start of the Fellowship. Graduate students must have their supervisor send a letter confirming their graduation or formal submission of the thesis before the start of the fellowship.

Application documents are to be emailed to beth.woods@utoronto.ca. Please send: a) your curriculum vitae, b) a letter of intent describing your interest in clinical/organizational ethics and in this Fellowship, and explaining how your experience prepares you for the Fellowship.

Please also arrange to have three original letters of reference sent by your referees via email directly to the JCB, Beth Woods, beth.woods@utoronto.ca.. Please ask your referees to address the selection criteria in paragraph 2 above.

For questions, please contact Beth Woods via email beth.woods@utoronto.ca, telephone (416) 978-1898 or fax (416) 978-1911.

The selection committee will accept applications until January 12, 2009.

While we appreciate all applications received, only those invited for an interview will be contacted.

Working Collaboratively for Sustainability - Call for Paper, Panel, and Workshops

Due Date:
Fri, 01/16/2009
Due Date Description:
Abstracts due date

You should attend and submit to this conference if you're interested in one or more of the conference goals.

Conference Goals:
Understand the risks and benefits of cross-sectoral partnerships
Improve the effectiveness of cross-sectoral partnerships
Understand effective leadership in cross-sectoral partnerships
Discuss the underlying commitment that drives sustainability projects
Develop new projects
Engage students and the Seattle community in sustainability projects
Engage with media to raise awareness of the power of cross-sector partnerships
Publish findings in book or journal form

To support these goals, we seek submissions that focus on partnerships that include these three sectors. The following topics have been developed in concert with sustainability and CSR practitioners from business, government, and NGOs, as well as faculty members from science and engineering, business, law, and arts and sciences at Seattle University. Submissions can take the form of papers, panels, or workshops.

Cross-sectoral submissions and projects that address all three sides of sustainability (social, economic, environment) will be given priority. Project partners must come from at least two sectors. We are especially interested in:
Interesting failures as well as successes
Risks and benefits to organizations in different sectors
Unintended consequences
Lessons learned about leadership across sectors
Legal and jurisdictional issues
Mind the gap
What are the gaps in sustainability policy for the developed vs. developing world?
What are the gaps for global enterprises operating in regions with different sustainability policies?
Many sustainability projects integrate economic and environmental goals. Social justice goals seem less represented. Is this true? If so, how can we reduce this gap?
How do you bridge the gap between a good idea and implementation?
How do you get the right people at the table and working together?
How do we connect investors and foundations with entrepreneurs and others creating sustainability projects?
i. What are the funding trends?
ii. How do investors and foundations measure success?
How can we verify sustainability claims and identify greenwashing by organizations?
Some companies working on sustainability don’t publicize their efforts for fear of criticism. This leaves a gap between what we need to know and knowledge that is out there. How can this be remedied?
How do companies protect information that gives them a competitive advantage when engaging in sustainability efforts with partners?
How do companies engage employees in these endeavors - both enthusiastic supporters and detractors?
How can people at the middle and bottom of organizations get sustainability on the agenda?

Abstracts and submissions (500 to 1000 words) are due January 16, 2009. If paper abstract is accepted, complete papers are due March 1, 2009. Please, electronic submissions only to dienharj@seattleu.edu.
